A day after a 38-year-old woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the residence of her in-laws at Sardari Kalan area in Sai Village here and was later cremated within their premises, police today urged the women facing harassment at their marital homes to dial emergency response number 112 for help, and lodge FIR against those harassing them.
Addressing media persons here, SP Headquarters Jammu, Anna Sinha, said Sushma Devi apparently died by hanging, though the exact reasons are being investigated.
She said a six-member medical board has been constituted to ascertain the exact cause of the death.
Meanwhile, the police officer said that taking immediate cognizance of the incident, three people have been arrested and sent to judicial custody.
Stressing that timely police intervention can save lives, Sinha appealed to women facing repeated harassment at the residence of their in-laws to lodge an FIR immediately, without looking for the option of reconciliation.
She also requested the family members of women to come forward if their daughters are constantly subjected to harassment by in-laws, asserting that police are always ready to help women in such cases.
“Women facing harassment must not suffer in silence. They should approach the police at once,” she said, adding that those unable to reach a police station directly must dial 112 for emergency help.
“Once this number is dialled, it is recorded at the Police Control Room, following which an emergency response vehicle reaches the place of the victim to provide her with immediate help, besides lodging an FIR and ensuring action against people indulging in violence against the victims,” she said.
The police officer said the last rites of Sushma Devi were allowed to be performed at the residence of the in-laws itself to respect the feelings of thousands of people who had gathered at the spot, as they were very angry.
Asserting that police will stand by harassed women at every step, Sinha said all accused in such cases will be made to face punishment come what may.
Asked what circumstances forced the woman to take the extreme step, she said the reasons are being investigated.
