SPO Dismissed Over Bribery Charge in J&K’s Kathua, Departmental Inquiry Ordered Against Three Cops

A Special Police Officer (SPO) was dismissed from service in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district after he was allegedly caught demanding and accepting a bribe from a truck driver during checking at Lakhanpur.

The action was taken on Monday after a video of the incident surfaced on social media. According to officials, the video purportedly showed SPO Ameer-ud-Din demanding and accepting ₹100 from a truck driver at Lakhanpur, the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir bordering Punjab. The incident allegedly took place on Sunday in the presence of three senior police personnel.

Taking serious note of the matter, Kathua SSP Mohita Sharma ordered the SPO’s immediate disengagement from service on the recommendation of the District Police Headquarters. The police department said the alleged act constituted a serious violation of discipline and had brought disrepute to the department.

The dismissed SPO has also been directed to deposit his uniform, arms and ammunition, if issued, with the concerned police authorities.

Meanwhile, a departmental inquiry has been ordered against three other policemen who were present at the spot. The officials facing inquiry are ASI Gian Chand, Head Constable Dhruv Singh and Selection Grade Constable Shamsher Singh.

The three policemen will be examined for alleged dereliction of duty and for allegedly failing to report the SPO’s misconduct to their senior officers.

The inquiry has been entrusted to the Superintendent of Police (Operations), Border and Kandi, Kathua, who has been directed to conduct the proceedings under the relevant provisions of the J&K Police Manual and submit findings along with specific recommendations to the authorities.
