Udhampur, January 27:
At least four people, including a CRPF jawan, were killed in a tragic road accident on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) near Jakhni Chowk in Udhampur district on Tuesday morning.
According to officials, the accident occurred around 11 am and involved a passenger bus, a broken-down off-road vehicle parked on the roadside, and a motorcycle.
Bus Hits Stationary Vehicle
Second-in-Command of 137 Battalion CRPF, Kartar Singh, told the media that a private bus rammed into the off-road vehicle, which had been parked on the roadside for repairs. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was completely crushed, resulting in the instant death of the driver and a mechanic present at the spot.
Passengers Thrown into Gorge
Following the collision, the bus windows shattered, causing two passengers to fall into a deep gorge. One of the passengers was identified as a CRPF jawan of the 52 Battalion, who was traveling while on leave. Both injured passengers were rescued in critical condition and rushed to hospital, where the CRPF jawan later succumbed to his injuries, taking the death toll to four.
Rescue Operation Launched
Soon after the incident, teams from the CRPF and local police reached the spot and jointly carried out a rescue operation. The bodies were retrieved and sent to a nearby hospital for post-mortem and other legal formalities.
Officials said that the identity of one deceased person is yet to be officially confirmed, while further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
