Big Relief for Jammu Commuters as One Lane of Kunjwani-Nayi Basti Elevated Flyover Opens for Trial Traffic

In a major relief for commuters in Jammu, one lane of the much-awaited Kunjwani-Nayi Basti Elevated Flyover has been opened for vehicular movement on a trial basis. The flyover has been developed as part of the Delhi-Katra Expressway and Jammu’s wider road connectivity network.

At present, vehicles coming from the Nayi Basti side can use one lane of the elevated corridor. Near Gangyal, commuters may have to change lanes at one point due to ongoing construction work. Repair and finishing works are still being carried out at some locations.

Traffic personnel have also been deployed near Kunjwani Chowk and the Last Morh area to guide motorists and encourage them to use the newly opened elevated route. According to officials, a large portion of the traffic is expected to shift to the flyover once regular movement begins.

Travel Time Expected to Reduce Significantly

The approximately 4.5-kilometre-long elevated corridor has been constructed under the supervision of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), with the project costing more than ₹1,400 crore. Construction work on the project began in 2022.

The opening of the trial lane is expected to provide major relief during peak hours for commuters travelling between Kunjwani, Satwari and Bikram Chowk. A journey that earlier took around 25 to 35 minutes due to traffic congestion could now take only about 4 to 6 minutes through the elevated route.

Only Through Traffic Should Use the Elevated Lane

Traffic Police and the construction agency have advised motorists to use the elevated lane primarily for non-stop through movement.

Vehicles travelling from Kunjwani towards Nayi Basti, Bikram Chowk and the inner areas of Jammu can use the elevated route. However, motorists heading towards Satwari Chowk, Jammu Airport or local markets along the existing road should continue using the service road, as there is currently no exit ramp available midway from the elevated section.

Safety Checks Before Full Opening

Officials said the trial run will help authorities monitor safety standards, traffic flow and speed limits before the corridor is fully opened.

Signal boards and other related works on the flyover are largely complete, while lighting and finishing works are being completed. After the technical inspection and completion of the remaining work on the other lane, the entire elevated corridor is expected to be opened formally for traffic in both directions.
