Jammu, October 6: Tension prevailed in Jammu’s busy Moti Bazaar after the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) sealed four shops, prompting local traders to shut the market and stage a protest against the civic body’s action.
According to reports, the shops were sealed by the JMC Revenue Wing over alleged violations related to encroachment. The civic body reportedly issued notices to the concerned shopkeepers around 10 days ago and provided them an opportunity to respond before taking the sealing action.
The sealing of the shops triggered strong resentment among traders, who alleged that the action was carried out without adequately addressing their concerns. The traders also expressed concern that the sealing could adversely affect their businesses, particularly during the ongoing festive season.
Following the protest, Jammu East MLA Yudhvir Sethi reached Moti Bazaar and interacted with the protesting traders. The traders apprised him of their concerns and sought intervention in the matter.
The incident has once again brought the issue of JMC’s anti-encroachment and regulatory action against commercial establishments into focus, with traders demanding relief and a review of the sealing action.
Further developments are awaited regarding the opening of the sealed shops and the decision of the concerned authorities after considering the traders’ representations.
