JPDCL Cracks Down on Electricity Theft in J&K, Illegal Connections to Face Immediate Disconnection

The Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) has tightened its action against electricity theft in Jammu and Kashmir, warning that consumers found using electricity illegally, including through unauthorised hooking, may face immediate disconnection and legal action.

According to a circular issued by JPDCL Managing Director G.P. Singh, the concerned sub-division in-charges have been directed to take action against electricity theft cases. Complaints will also be lodged with the concerned police stations under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003.

Electricity Supply to Be Restored After Payment

As per the directions, electricity supply disconnected in cases of power theft will be restored only after the prescribed charges, penalties and outstanding dues have been paid, subject to the applicable rules and procedures.

The department has also emphasised transparency in enforcement. Details of authorised officials, including their names, designations and jurisdictions, will be made available on the official JPDCL website and at the concerned offices.

The circular further stresses that inspections, evidence collection and restoration of electricity supply must be carried out in accordance with the applicable electricity supply code and prescribed procedures to safeguard consumer rights.

The move aims to curb electricity theft, prevent revenue losses and improve power distribution services for genuine consumers across Jammu and Kashmir.
